The beauty of a set of scales, its harmony and grace, viewed from an aesthetic point of view, leaving aside just for a moment its practical function as a measuring tool, this is what the exhibition “BILANCE VAGABONDE” aims to present, to showcase the other side of the scale. The exhibition is on at the Museo della Bilancia in Campogalliano (Modena), from 25 January to 27 September 2009, and it travels an artistic path leading to the discovery of new roles and new allegories. A miscellany that, while it does indeed show the work of such famous artists as Rubens, Annibale Carracci, Durer, Vermeer, Chagall, and of such movements as, Dadaism, New Objectivity and Surrealism, is much more than just an art exhibition. The array of works to gaze at, handle and comment on consists of printed reproductions and projections and visitors are asked to take an active part in the exhibition. The idea is to combine the vision of the scales, always considered a practical, everyday object and therefore much too prosaic for the high-flown, at times pretentious world of art, with the way they are depicted in works of art. The project has a double aim: to bring two worlds into contact that appear to be the antithesis of each other and to assign values to the scales that go way beyond their usual material associations. The works on display range in time from depictions of psychostasis (weighing of souls) from Ancient Egypt, through to the early 20th century movements and then on to works of contemporary art. The common thread running through the whole exhibition is the constant presence of the iconography of the scales, with each exhibit accompanied by an information panel giving a complete history and critical analysis of the work. The exhibition unwinds over eleven sections (VISIONI DINAMICHE (DYNAMIC VISIONS), ALLEGORIE MISTERIOSE (MYSTERIOUS ALLEGORIES), STADERE PERFETTE (PERFECT STEELYARDS), PROVINI ALLA DIX (DIX TRY-OUTS), MATITECOLORIBILANCE (PENCILS-COLOURS-SCALES), TATTO ARTISTICO (ARTISTIC TOUCH), FRUTTI IMPOSSIBILI (IMPOSSIBLE FRUIT), PUZZLE PITTORICO (JIGSAW PUZZLE), SCALES OVER TIME, NUOVE DIMENSIONI ESPRESSIVE (NEW EXPRESSIVE DIMENSIONS), GIUSTIZIA SECOLARE E DIVINA (HUMAN AND DIVINE JUSTICE) in which there will be a constant exchange between the thematic and playful aspects, cognitive notions and interactive or practical features. Visitors will be plunged into the atmosphere of the exhibition by means of the vision of a themed triptych with moving parts that reproduce those of the scales. Visitors will then follow the clues guiding them toward discovery of the exact location of the scales that have been ‘rubbed out’ by photographic retouching. In another area visitors can put on a mask through which they cannot see in order to come into direct contact with the Kairos, a bas-relief cast from the Classical era and, just using the sense of touch, they can seek out the individual details of the scene and the instrument depicted. Visitors can give free rein to their own creativity in a real-life artist’s studio, using their hands and, according to their own taste and age, they can fashion a collage, daw their personal vision of a futuristic set of scales, paint and colour in. You can also have great fun becoming part of the picture, become the main character in one of Otto Dix’s strange settings, trying on costumes and striking poses just like the figures in the painting. As you wander through the exhibition you will encounter many opportunities for interaction, discovering different uses for the scales, reconstructing their eras chronologically, tracing their iconographic evolution over the centuries (from Classical Greek ceramics to 20th century painting) and with the photographic work of contemporary artist Sergio Capone “Come pesare l’origine”, come to grips with new dimensions and new expressive and artistic trends. This therefore is an exhibition that takes a step back from the scientific goal of previous projects, but in the hallowed tradition of the museum, it does not neglect its mission to teach and inform and make use of guided working methods. BILANCE VAGABONDE is a fun exhibition that will also encourage reflection, a very special show for a very diverse mix of visitors and for families on the lookout for creative time-off spaces. An integral part of the exhibition is the constant stimulus to think, to reason, to try to find solutions and to discover allegorical meanings. You can dress up, take photos and print them, all in an atmosphere designed to create a virtual world in which you can get actively involved.
